Announcing the Release of Zikula 1.0.0
It is my pleasure, at this time of great change in the Zikula project, to announce the immediate availability of Zikula 1.0, codename adam_baum. This release is the culmination of years of hard work by everyone involved in the project, past and present, and brings Zikula to the forefront of the Web Application sector.
Zikula 1.0 combines the best of a solid API and object library, with cross database compatibility, templating, security and performance. It is fully backwards compatible with earlier versions and API compliant third party modules. The Zikula 1.0 release contains many usability and interface improvements over the 0.7x series, new modules and a new structure, to make this our best release ever!
So, why not download and try it out now? Release packages are listed below. Or, alternatively, try our new live demo, and experience the best of Zikula, including prominent extensions. Lastly, if you haven't already, sign up to the zikula-announce and zikula-developers mailing lists to keep informed.
Packages
The packages provided here are 'Core', 'Full' and 'ValueAddons', with core containing just those modules required for the system to run and 'full' containing all those modules currently maintained by the Zikula development team. An upgrade distribution will follow in the future containing all the modules required to upgrade 0.7x series websites, however this will not be available until some third party developments are stabilized.
DownloadsMake Your Own Distribution!
The Zikula core in this release is intentionally limited in functionality. Third party developers are the ones that really add to Zikula's feature set, and make Zikula what it is. Zikula 1.0 includes the facility to create 'distributions', aimed towards a specific scenario such as a blog or ecommerce website. These distributions should contain extensions and default settings appropriate to the scenario at which they are aimed. If you've found the ideal collection of modules, blocks and themes to create your perfect Zikula site, why not share it? We will make distributions available in the downloads section here on community.zikula.org. Keep your eye out for the new Extensions Database, which will make the process of creating distributions and downloading packages brilliantly simple and easy in the future.
Remembering Greg Allen
Zikula 1.0 was codenamed the adam_baum release after Greg Allen, a former lead developer who died on June 16th, 2002. Greg was one of the project's founding members, who contributed a great deal while alive, and Zikula 1.0 is dedicated to his memory.
